III High-Level International Conference on “water for Sustainable Development” International Decade of activity for 2018-2028 was held in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan. The international event is attended by a delegation led by the Minister of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Majnun Mammadov. The delegation includes the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, responsible persons of the State Water Resources Agency.
Opening the event, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon said that the rational use of water resources in the light of global warming remains one of the important challenges. Recalling that the hottest years and months have been observed on the planet over the past 5 years, the president of Tajikistan added that each year the share of water emergencies in the total number of natural disasters and the amount of damage caused by them increases. President Emomali Rahmon emphasized the importance of discussion and global cooperation to take effective and urgent measures to minimize the negative impact of climate change on Water Resources. The head of state of Tajikistan expressed confidence that important results on rational and sustainable use of water resources will be achieved at the discussions to be held within the framework of the 29th Session of the Conference of parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Azerbaijan in November this year.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov touched upon the difficulties in irrigating agricultural lands as a result of the reduction of water resources due to global climate changes in recent years. Noting that Azerbaijan is one of the countries with limited water and Land Resources, Minister Majnun Mammadov stressed that ensuring the efficient use of water resources and improving the water economy is always in the spotlight. Significant state support is provided to the formation of intensive agriculture in Azerbaijan, including the introduction of modern irrigation systems. The Minister said that a commission was established by Order of President Ilham Aliyev to coordinate activities in this area. Taking into account the new challenges, the commission identified 3 priorities for minimizing the impact of climate change on water resources, such as reducing existing water losses, increasing water resources in the country, assessing and possible use of alternative water resources. The participants of the event were informed in detail about the implemented and planned measures related to the efficient use of water in Azerbaijan.
Noting that the effects of climate change make Management important at the regional level, the minister stressed that all initiatives in the field of water resources will be in the spotlight at the COP29 event and useful discussions will be held in this direction.
The event discussed the effective use of water resources, the Prevention of water losses, the role of innovation and digitalization in the sustainable use of Natural Resources, the directions of future cooperation in this direction, and the work to be done at the global, regional and country levels on water for sustainable development. Experts emphasized the importance of sectoral distribution and accurate accounting of water resources, expansion of the application of modern irrigation systems for managing the impact of global climate changes on water sources.
