Conference and Exhibition on "Sustainable Food Security Against Climate Change" held in Baku

Baku hosted a conference and exhibition on "Sustainable food security against the backdrop of climate change". The conference, organized jointly by the International Association of Operative Millers with the Association of Grain Producers and Processors of Azerbaijan, was attended by representatives of government agencies of various countries, the private sector, international organizations, specialists and experts working in the agricultural sector.

Opening the event, Minister of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Majnun Mammadov said that the consequences of global climate change are increasing in the world, and these effects are more pronounced in the agricultural sector. So, in recent years, agricultural producers have been experiencing farm seasons with severe droughts and mild winters. Minister Majnun Mammadov noted that in the light of modern challenges, the efficient use of land and water resources, the application of resource-saving approaches, the protection of the environment and the formation of sustainable economic traditions are given special attention to the participants of the event. Minister Majnun Mammadov added that within the framework of agrarian reforms carried out by the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev, state support mechanisms for agriculture are constantly being improved, and the volume of relevant support measures on these mechanisms is regularly increased.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture and forestry of Türkiye Ibrahim Yumakli said that in the current period of global climate change, ensuring food security, reducing the effects of climate change and sustainable development of agriculture are the main tasks ahead.

Chairman of the Board of the state reserves Agency Sabuhi Sadigov, in turn, touched upon the issue of ensuring food security. He noted that the production of grain, especially food wheat, plays an important role in ensuring food security. The head of the agency stressed that the necessary support measures are being taken in the direction of updating and managing state resources, grain production and processing, and expanding the logistics infrastructure in our country.

Speakers at the event touched upon issues of climate change and depletion of natural resources, creation of a sustainable agricultural system in line with new challenges, digital transformation of the agricultural sector, technology transfer in this area, sharing best practices, rapid population growth, changing consumer demands, increasing productivity by protecting the environment, ensuring food and food security. Local and foreign experts shared their views on the protection of land, protection of biodiversity, rational use of water resources, the creation of large grain farms based on the application of modern technologies, increasing productivity, increasing the level of self-sufficiency with wheat, and the development of the processing industry.
