19 November 2024

A special discussion on the topic of climate change and climate-friendly agriculture continues at the “Food, Agriculture and Water Day” within the framework of COP29. On the eighth day of the international climate conference, panel discussions were held on the topic “Agri-food heritage from COP to COP: the key to achieving global climate goals”.

Global climate commitments were discussed at the event held in the "Blue zone".

The panel discussion on "Food, Agriculture and Water Day" was moderated by Kaveh Zahedi, Director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Office on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov brought to attention the importance of further development of the achievements achieved at international climate conferences. The Minister said that the Baku Harmony Climate Initiative for farmers aims to harmonize efforts to create sustainable agri-food systems around the world. Noting that the Harmony Initiative fully complies with the goals set out in the COP28 UAE Declaration, the Minister stressed that this initiative will play an important role in strengthening cooperation and developing the achievements in combating climate change. This initiative will provide significant support to the process of creating a legacy of stronger, climate-resistant food systems and shape the future of agriculture by laying the foundation for permanent joint action.

UK Environment Minister Mary Creagh, United Arab Emirates Climate Change and Environment Minister Amna Al Dahak, as well as officials speaking at the panel session “Accelerating action from COP to COP” pointed out that COP conferences are increasingly focusing on agri-food systems as an important sector for combating climate change and adapting to its impacts, and that it is important to meet global climate.

It was noted that this measure will aim to identify synergies, share lessons learned and promote accelerated activities at the national and regional levels to achieve global climate commitments under the UNFCCC. At the same time, the event is viewed as an opportunity to promote stronger cooperation between sectors, simplify resources and promote continued focus on long-term goals.

Panel discussions continued in question-answer format.
