21 May 2020

The process of migration of sheep flocks from winter huts to summer pastures started in Azerbaijan. The migration of flocks from winter huts in lowland areas to summer pastures in mountainous areas will continue until the end of May.

Minister of Agriculture Inam Karimov watched the process of migration of flocks from farms in Bilasuvar winter huts to Lerik summer pastures on May 21. The flocks climb to the summer pastures in the direction of Takdam-Pirasora-Orand by Masalli-Yardimli way. During the day, more than 5,000 small-cattle are migrating in this direction.

Minister Inam Karimov got acquainted with the process of migration, talked with the shepherds raising to the summer pasture, and took interest in their care. Sharing his views on the complex measures implemented to develop animal husbandry and feed supply, the Minister said that the development of the agricultural sector was declared as a priority by the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev: “By the order of the president, the state program on the development of animal husbandry in the country was prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture. The main objective of the program is to improve the breed composition of animals and increase productivity by applying new farm models in the country. As a result of the implementation of the program, the volume of production of products of animal origin will increase, fodder, arable and grazing areas will be used more efficiently. The increase in productivity will contribute to an increase in farmers’ incomes and improvement of their material well-being”.

Speaking about the preparation for the migration process, the summer pastures are very effective in meeting the food needs of sheep and goats, especially from an economic point of view. Owners of farms engaged in the breeding of small-cattle noted that grazing of animals on the summer pasture allows full satisfaction of the demand for food. At the same time, it causes a decrease in the cost of production of the farm and positively affects the development of animal husbandry in the country.

It should be noted that in the Lerik summer pastures, breed of sheep flocks are kept  mainly in Pirasora. “Pirasora” sheep have been crossed as a result of folk selection and have high wool, meat, fat, fertility ability. This breed of sheep, widely spread in the Lerik zone, was named “Pirasora” sheep in honor of the village of Pirasora. The living weight of the sire of Rams is 60-75 kg, the weight of the mother sheep is 35 kg, while the weight of the annual of Rams reach 30 kg.

Then the Minister visited the animal farms in the summer pastures of Lerik region, got acquainted with the lifestyle of the farm owners in the summer pasture and the conditions of animal storage.

It should be noted that the process of feeding the flocks on the summer pasture continues until the beginning of October.
