The Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Majnun Mammadov, met with the World Bank’s Agricultural and Food Practice Mission, which is visiting our country.
The meeting discussed the current status and future directions of cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and the World Bank in the field of agriculture and irrigation, as well as issues related to the preparation process, approval and implementation of the “Competitive, Sustainable Agriculture and Irrigation Services” (CRAIS) project, which is being prepared jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture. It was noted that the project currently being discussed and under preparation includes the renewal of water transportation infrastructure across the country, the establishment of modern irrigation systems in selected areas, land consolidation and pilot applications related to the work of Sudanese User Associations. It was noted that this project will contribute to increasing productivity, sustainability and competitiveness in the country’s agricultural sector through irrigation water conservation and climate-friendly approaches.
During the meeting, Minister Majnun Mammadov provided information on the measures taken in the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan, noting that the restoration of irrigation systems and the application of water-saving systems are of particular importance in the development of the country's agriculture. It was noted at the meeting that Azerbaijan belongs to the category of countries facing water shortages due to climate change, and that the majority of the water used is formed from sources outside the country. In this regard, it was noted that the application of approaches that will minimize water loss in the collection, transportation and use of water used in agriculture is one of the main priorities in the agrarian policy. It was also emphasized that the application of new pilot approaches in the field of land consolidation and on-farm irrigation water management across the country within the framework of the project is important.
Member of the delegation Holger Kray noted that Azerbaijan attaches special importance to combating climate change and its negative effects, and emphasized that he highly appreciates the achievements of our country in the development of agriculture and irrigation infrastructure. He expressed confidence that the ongoing CRAIS project will serve to increase productivity and economic activity in the agricultural sector, support employment, and increase financial accessibility for farmers.
The meeting also exchanged views on preparation for project implementation, involvement of experts in the field, acceleration of technical preparation processes, and other issues of mutual interest.
