Agricultural Research Center under Minsitry of Agriculture hosted a seminar on “Aging Farmers: Implications for Agriculture and Beginning Farmers Programs.” The seminar, which was attended by Head of Department of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University, Professor Rodolfo M. Nayga, was the keynote speaker. The seminar was attended by employees of the Ministry of Agriculture and other subordinate agencies.
Professor Rodolfo M. Nayga presented key findings on the aging trends of farmers in the global agricultural sector, providing detailed information on the challenges and opportunities for emerging farmers. The discussions covered topical issues such as the increasing average age of farmers worldwide and its impact on agricultural sustainability, declining interest of young people in agriculture due to barriers such as difficulties in accessing land, high investment costs and financial risks, significant role of women farmers and the specific challenges they face, and policy measures and consumer support mechanisms to attract the new generation of farmers to the sector.
The topics aroused the interest of the seminar participants, who actively participated in the discussions organized. The seminar provided valuable knowledge for policymakers, researchers and stakeholders in agricultural sector in Azerbaijan. This knowledge will be reflected in the formulation of strategies aimed at youth participation in the agricultural sector, strengthening gender equality and ensuring the sustainability of agriculture.
It should be noted that Professor Nayga is a globally recognized economist in the fields of food economics, consumer behavior and agricultural policy. His research on consumer food choices, nutrition, and health has made significant contributions to both academic and public administration activities.
