A regional meeting was held in Tovuz on the topic of “Joint fight against brown marmorated stink bug”. The meeting was attended by the heads of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AFSA), the executive authorities of Tovuz, Gazakh, Agstafa, Shamkir, Samukh and Goygol districts, directors of the State Agricultural Development Centers operating in these regions, and specialists working in the field of plant protection.

Before the meeting, the participants visited the monument to the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and paid tribute to his memory by laying flowers in front of it.

Making an opening speech at the event, the head of the Tovuz District Executive Authority, Mammad Mammadov, said that systematic measures to combat plant pests, including brown marbled weevil, are being continued in the region, and that relevant state agencies operating in the region are actively participating in organizing the fight against pests. He said that continuous information work is being carried out among the residents of the region in order to accelerate the fight.

Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov said in his speech that one of the most important issues ahead is to assess the current state of the fight against the brown marbled weevil, which poses a serious threat to agricultural plants and the ecosystem, and to ensure the effectiveness of future steps. Providing information on the results of phytosanitary monitoring and awareness-raising measures, the minister noted that the more successful outcome of the fight also depends on people's awareness. Stressing that the fight against the weevil continues for the wintering period of 2026, Majnun Mammadov said that monitoring has already been carried out at 12,630 points in 31 regions, and chemical control has been completed in about 3,000 foci.

Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Vugar Karimov said that local agencies of the ministry are carrying out regular measures in forest and forest-peripheral areas together with other agencies. He noted that the brown marbled weevil is an ecologically dangerous pest and emphasized that a systematic fight against this pest is being organized.

Deputy Chairman of the AFSA Balarahim Guliyev provided information on the work carried out by the Regional Coordination Centers within the framework of the fight against the brown marbled sedge, presented a report on the meetings held and the measures taken.

In their speeches, the heads of local executive authorities provided information on the measures taken in the regions and made proposals to strengthen the activities of the headquarters.

The meeting held a wide exchange of views on the organization of measures to combat the brown marbled sedge in 2026.
