In July 9, an online meeting was held on the theme of “Measures implemented within the development of cotton-growing and upcoming tasks” in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Agriculture Minister Inam Karimov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Melioration and Water Management OJSC, Zaur Mikayilov, agencies of central and local authorities responsible for this area, heads of cotton companies, representatives of Farmers Assosiation, Azerbaijan Cotton Assosiation and farmers participated in the meeting.
It was noted by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev that the development of the agricultural sector was announced as one of the priorities at the event. Like all branches of agriculture, cotton growing has entered a new stage of development. The instructions given by the President in recent years, the measures implemented within the "State Program for the Development of cotton-growing in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2017-2022" have borne fruit.
According to the Action Plan of comprehensive measures covering the entire production process of cotton-growing, all organizational and agrotechnical issues envisaged for the present period have been implemented on time and qualitatively. Starting from the beginning of the year, the contracts between cotton producers and companies, the issues of tillage, irrigation were kept in focus, measures were taken to determine the volume of demand for technical, pesticide and mineral fertilizers. As a result, about 100,000 hectares of cotton were planted in 17 regions of Azerbaijan this year. We have achieved good results in all areas where we sow raw materials, and cotton growing is still under way in the districts.
Preparation for cotton production in the current year, the upcoming tasks, development of cotton-growing and goals discussed in the meeting. It was noted that as a result of the sharp warming of the weather in recent days, the demand for irrigation water of cotton crops has increased, and therefore the need for timely irrigation of the fields has arisen. It was noted that the main goal facing today is to increase productivity using intensive technologies in cotton dressing. At the same time, land and water resources should be used effectively for high yields, and turn-based planting should be applied. In addition, it was stressed the importance of timely and correct implementation of agrotechnical measures, agrochemical analysis of land plots, proper use of mineral fertilizers, timely implementation of measures to combat pests.
At the event, the sides exchanged views on the prospects for the development of cotton-growing, issues related to the provision of equipment, fertilizers, seeds, medicines and water, given subsidies discussed at the event. At the end of the discussions, it was noted that the meetings would be continued in this format and relevant instructions were given for the operative solution of the issues raised.
